Focus

This week has been an exercise in focusing. I've stressed in a few blogs how much work it actually takes to remain active in social media. I've had difficulty remaining engaged this week. I've also had trouble with distractions. I get on Twitter, or Instagram, and then I find myself spiraling down a path of unrelated distractions. So, I prompt this here, but I also will prompt it in Twitter. What are your tips for staying focused on Social Media?

  1. Staying focused on social media is a task all in itself. It is easy to get sidetracked and then 2 hours later you're down a completely unrelated rabbit hole. What I do to avoid this, is I make a list of the topics / assignments that I need to cover or do and what platforms I need to do them on. I then set aside about an hour or so a day to complete that task list. It sounds simple, but it has honestly helped me so much navigate all of the platforms that we have had to cover in this course.

    1. Frankie, I like the idea of making a list of a topic or two and staying on course with these. Otherwise, I also discover tangential topics into rabbit holes.

    2. Hey Frankie,

List do work well for me, they require more forethought and some planning. I'm not always the best about that, but they give you a roadmap, or a check list. and doesn't it feel great to check those task off?

  2. Here's what I currently do and it actually helps me: this summer, I ended having my full-time job, 2 intense courses at FSU and my internship to complete. Yes, my days are a bit busy ;-). But thanks to this overloaded schedule, I was forced to really time every parts of my days. So I dedicated 1 hour each morning and one hour each evening to web 2.0, which allows me to follow conversations, posts some stuff and keep exploring new tools. My whole days and week are planned on Trello. You might think it removes all the fun and the spontaneity, but it actually allows me to manage a bit of free time each day. When the hour is over, I have a kind of internal alarm that tells me I need to move to the next task, so I realized that I must stay focused on why I'm on social media. Time management software can be helpful in some cases to keep me on track, but for now, just keeping a look on my computer clock is enough.

    1. Wow, you go Marion! It's a task juggling all these things, especially when they aren't always related.
